The United States Government Opens the Visa Lottery for 2022/2023

What is US Visa Lottery?

The State Department has opened a lottery to randomly select 55,000 individuals from all countries who meet requirements and are eligible for immigrant visas in 2022/2023. Participants in our annual visa diversity lottery must have a high school education or its equivalent, or at least two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform. What is Diversity Visa Lottery

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as the Green Card lottery, provides a maximum of 55,000 immigrant visas each fiscal year to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Applicants may be selected in an annual random drawing, or lottery, conducted by USCIS. You must meet certain eligibility requirements and there is no guarantee that you will be selected to receive a visa.

It is a program created and controlled by the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, and it is established for the purpose of offering not less than 50,000 green cards to countries with a very low immigration level to the United States.

This program is introduced in 1990 in order to enhance the diversity of the US population. The US government wants to have different races in the country, so it comes up with the idea of giving people from other countries and continents a massive chance of becoming permanent residents in the United States via the program.

Who can apply?

You may apply if you were born in any country except, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and The United Kingdom. There is no age limit to apply. You do not need a college degree to be eligible. The lottery is open to natives of all countries, with a few exceptions. People who live in countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to America over the past five years are ineligible.

Also, people who have already been granted permanent residency are ineligible (unless they’re currently living abroad). This means that most South Americans, Europeans, and Middle Easterners can enter. There is no cap on how many entries each person can submit.

How to apply 2022/2023

After reviewing your entry, you will receive a notification if you are eligible to participate in a lottery drawing. If selected, you will be notified through your registered email address on whether or not you have been randomly selected to receive an immigrant visa number and have qualified to apply for permanent residence.

The DV-2023 Program: The online registration period for the DV-2023 Program begins on Wednesday, October 6, 2022, at 12:00 noon, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) (GMT-4), and concludes on Tuesday, November 9, 2022, at 12:00 noon, Eastern Standard Time (EST) (GMT-5). Individuals who submit more than one entry during the registration period will be disqualified.

Will I qualify?

If you were born in any country except Canada, China (mainland-born, excluding Hong Kong S.A.R. and Taiwan), Japan, South Korea, or Mexico, then you are eligible to apply. At least 50% of your family members must also have been born outside of these countries; if not, then they cannot qualify either.

To qualify for a US visa, you must be from a qualified country and not have previously used an immigration or visa lottery program. A qualified country means that citizens of that country are eligible to apply to immigrate to the US. Each year, new countries qualify.

How much does it cost?

The fees vary depending on whether you’re applying as an individual or a married couple. For example, as an individual, it costs $0 to apply. However, if you’re applying as a married couple, it costs $440 per person. The fees can be paid online with a credit card or by mail with a check or money order. It is important to note that there are no refunds for any visa lottery applications.

What documents are required?

The documents to be submitted are Passport, Birth Certificate, Police Clearance Certificate, and any other document that is required by US Law. In order to apply, you will have to register and sign up on www.dvlottery.state.gov. The US visa lottery requires that all applicants submit an online application between October 4 and November 7, 2023.

Along with your electronic application, you must provide proof of enrollment letter or certificate showing at least six credits in undergraduate study or two years of work experience in a related field. Alternatively, if you’re currently enrolled as a high school student, you must submit proof of high school graduation. You also need to be proficient in English and supply your parents’ names if they were born outside of North America.

How long does it take?

It can take anywhere from a few months to several years depending on which program you apply for and how quickly you respond to any requests for information. Most applicants will begin with a file review, where your application is examined to determine whether it’s complete. If your application makes it through, you may be required to attend an interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or submit additional paperwork.
